For just the sixth time in Mega Millions history, a jackpot has been won on Friday the 13th. This time there were two lucky winning tickets, one sold in Michigan and the other in Rhode Island (that state’s first Mega Millions jackpot winner!) They will share the $42 million jackpot ($26,266,417 cash value), having matched all six numbers drawn: the white balls 2, 7, 18, 26 and 31, plus the gold Mega Ball 12. The final jackpot amount was adjusted slightly based on actual sales.
Also Friday night, one ticket sold in New York matched the five white balls to win $1 million.
Some consider Friday the 13th to be unlucky, but not for the newest millionaires and previous Mega Millions jackpot winners on the infamous day in Ohio (November 2015), New York (March 2009) and especially Michigan (which in addition to Friday’s winner already had three jackpot winners on a Friday the 13th, in June 2014, May 2011 and June 2008).
This is the sixth Mega Millions jackpot won this year. It had been rolling since it was last won at $105 million on September 22 in New York. Earlier 2017 jackpots were won in California ($191 million on January 27 and $61 million on April 28), Arkansas ($177 million on March 31) and Illinois ($393 million on August 11).
In this jackpot run, more than 5.7 million prizes have been won at all levels since September 22, including seven prizes of $1 million or more.
The jackpot resets to $15 million ($9 million cash) for the next drawing on Tuesday, October 17.
