Mega Millions jackpot jumps to $405 million!

For the fourth time in 2018, the Mega Millions jackpot has surpassed $400 million and moved into top-ten territory! No ticket matched all six numbers drawn Tuesday night – the white balls 2, 22, 29, 31 and 34, plus the gold Mega Ball 1. As a result, the estimated jackpot for the next drawing on Friday, October 5, is $405 million ($235.0 million cash) – if won at that level, it would be the eighth largest prize in Mega Millions history!

That amount more than doubles the largest jackpot ever won during the month of October, historically a challenging month to produce a top prize winner. In Mega Millions’ 16 years, the jackpot has been won just twelve times in October, the largest being a $200 million prize claimed in Virginia for the October 16, 2009, drawing.

While the jackpot continues its roll, thirty tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball for the game’s $10,000 third prize. Six of those are actually worth $30,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier (available in most states for an extra $1 purchase), which was 3x Tuesday night.

In total, the October 2 drawing produced 1,001,138 winning tickets at all prize levels. Since the last jackpot was won on July 24, there have been more than 12 million winning tickets at all prize levels, including 18 worth $1 million or more.

A California office pool of 11 co-workers shared the last Mega Millions jackpot won – a whopping $543 million prize on July 24, the third largest in the game’s history. Three other jackpots have been won this year – $451 million on January 5 (Florida), $533 million on March 30 (New Jersey), and $142 million on May 4 (Ohio).
