(AUSTIN) – A Leander, Texas, resident claimed the $227 million jackpot prize that was advertised for the Mega Millions® drawing held on Sept. 24. The cash value option was selected at the time of purchase and the claimant will receive $157,091,592, the largest prize ever paid out to a single Texas Lottery® player. The claimant elected to remain anonymous.
The winning Quick Pick ticket matched all of the numbers drawn (6-14-24-42-46) and the Mega Ball (9). The ticket was purchased at Lakeline Express Mart, located at 2004 N. Lakeline Blvd., in Cedar Park. For selling the jackpot-winning ticket, the retailer received a $1 million retailer bonus.
The claimant becomes the 13th Mega Millions jackpot winner in Texas and the first since October 2016 when It Will Buy Me a Boat Revocable Trust Dated November 17, 2016, Garon R. Horton, Trustee, of Rockwall, claimed a $49 million advertised prize. Texas joined the multijurisdictional game in 2003 and had its first Mega Millions jackpot winner in 2004 when Ut Van Nguyen of Carrollton claimed the $101 million advertised jackpot from the Oct. 1, 2004 drawing.
The next Mega Millions drawing will be held Friday, Oct. 25. The jackpot prize for the drawing is set at an estimated annuitized $93 million.
Mega Millions is played by choosing five numbers from a field of 70 and one Mega Ball number from the second field of 25 numbers. To win the Mega Millions jackpot, players must match all six numbers drawn including the Mega Ball. Players matching fewer numbers may not win the jackpot, but still walk away winners. Mega Millions offers a $40 Million starting jackpot and a second-tier (Match 5+0) prize of $1 million. By choosing the Megaplier for $1 more per play, players can multiply their non-jackpot winnings by two, three, four or five times, winning as much as $5 million. Drawings are broadcast each Tuesday and Friday at 10:12 p.m. CT.
