In 2020, two states have produced their first-ever Mega Millions jackpot-winning tickets, as Wisconsin followed in the footsteps of Arizona in taking the game’s top prize. A single ticket sold in Wisconsin matched all six numbers drawn Tuesday night – the white balls 25, 28, 38, 59 and 62, plus the gold Mega Ball 22. The lucky ticket-holder wins the $120 million jackpot ($95.4 million cash); the final amount is slightly higher than the initial estimate, and is based on actual sales.
It is the fifth Mega Millions jackpot won to date this year. The largest was that first-time win in Arizona, as a whopping $414 million prize was won there on June 9. Two jackpots have been won in New Jersey, $202 million on February 11 and $123 million on July 24. And a $22 million prize was won in California on July 31.
The September 15 drawing also had one ticket, sold in Georgia, match the five white balls to win the game’s $1 million second prize. Thirteen tickets won the third prize of $10,000; two of those are actually worth $40,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier, a $1 extra purchase available in most states.
Since the jackpot was last won in California on July 31, there have been more than 5.2 million winning tickets at all prize levels, including 10 second-prize winners of $1 million or more. And not only did this roll produce the game’s first jackpot winner in Wisconsin, it also included the largest Mega Millions prize ever won in the Virgin Islands (a $3 million ticket in the August 28 drawing).
The jackpot for the next drawing on Friday, September 18, resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($15.9 million cash).
