RELEASE DATE: 9/15/2021
For the first time in almost four months, the Mega Millions® jackpot has topped $400 million! After no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Tuesday night – the white balls 4, 13, 19, 63 and 64, plus the gold Mega Ball 16 – Friday’s jackpot is an estimated $405 million ($294.7 million cash)! If won at that level, it would be the 13th largest jackpot in the 19-year history of the game.
While the jackpot grows, there have been plenty of other winners along the way – more than 15.2 million winning tickets at all prize levels have been sold since the jackpot was last won in Illinois on June 8. That includes 28 worth $1 million or more.
In the September 14 drawing alone, there were 765,280 tickets winning tickets at all prize levels. Two tickets, both sold in Florida, matched the five white balls to win the game’s second prize. Ordinarily, that means $1 million, but both tickets included the optional Megaplier, a $1 extra purchase available in most states. With the 2X Megaplier drawn Tuesday night, the two Florida tickets are worth $2 million each.
For matching four white balls plus the Mega Ball, 25 tickets won $10,000 each; three of those are actually worth $20,000 because they also included the optional Megaplier.
Four Mega Millions jackpots have been won to date in 2021. Most recently, a $55 million prize was won in Illinois on June 8. To start 2021, the second largest jackpot in Mega Millions history – $1.05 billion – was won on January 22 by a group of players in Michigan. The other two jackpots awarded this year were $516 million in Pennsylvania on May 21, and $96 million in New York on February 16.
