Less than three weeks after a huge Mega Millions® jackpot was won in Pennsylvania, the jackpot was hit again, this time in Illinois. A single ticket sold in that state matched all six numbers drawn Tuesday night – the white balls 9, 22, 39, 41 and 54, plus the gold Mega Ball 19 – to win the prize of $55 million ($38.0 million cash). The final jackpot amount is based on actual sales and differs slightly from the initial estimated value.
Two tickets matched the five white balls to win the game’s $1 million second prize; they were sold in Iowa and West Virginia. Seventeen tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to take the third prize of $10,000; seven of those are actually worth $30,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier, a $1 extra purchase available in most states. Tuesday night’s Megaplier was 3X.
In total, the June 8 drawing produced a total of 405,765 winning tickets at all prize levels, plus the lucky jackpot winner.
The Mega Millions jackpot was won three previous times this year; most recently at $516 million in Pennsylvania on May 21. A whopping $1.050 billion prize was collected by a group of players in Michigan on January 22, and a New York couple took home $96 million on February 16.
The jackpot for the next drawing on Friday, June 11, resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($13.8 million cash).
