A lucky ticket holder in New York won the big Mega Millions® jackpot Tuesday night! A single ticket sold in that state matched all six numbers drawn September 21 – the white balls 36, 41, 45, 51 and 56, plus the gold Mega Ball 13 – to win the $431 million prize ($314.4 million cash). The final jackpot amount was based on actual sales.
The jackpot had been growing since it was last won in Illinois on June 8. In the 30 drawings of this roll, there were more than 17.2 million winning tickets at all prize levels, including 30 second prizes of $1 million or more.
Also on Tuesday night, one ticket sold in Connecticut matched the five white balls to win the $1 million second prize. Twenty-five tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to take the game’s third prize. Six of those are worth $30,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier, a $1 extra purchase available in most states; the Megaplier for this drawing was 3X. The other 19 third prize tickets win the standard $10,000 prize.
In total, the September 21 drawing produced 1,065,466 winning tickets at all prize levels, plus the lucky jackpot winner.
The big win is New York’s second Mega Millions jackpot this year, following a $96 million prize won by an Oneida County couple on February 16. Other jackpots won to date in 2021 include $516 million in Pennsylvania on May 21; $55 million in Illinois on June 8; and the second largest jackpot in Mega Millions history, $1.05 billion awarded to a group of Michigan players on January 22.
The jackpot for the next drawing on Friday, September 24, resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($14.5 million cash).
