Another big January Mega Millions jackpot is in the books! In a month that often produces a big jackpot win, the jackpot was hit Friday night in California. One lucky ticket-holder matched all six numbers in the January 28 drawing – the white balls 3, 16, 25, 44 and 55, plus the gold Mega Ball 13 – to win the prize of $426 million ($292.9 million cash). The final jackpot amount was higher than the estimate, based on actual sales. The winning ticket was sold in Woodland Hills, Calif.
Also on Friday night, four tickets matched the five white balls to win the game’s second prize. One, sold in Ohio, is worth $3 million because it included the optional Megaplier (a $1 extra purchase available in most states), which was 3X Friday night. The other three Match 5 winning tickets, worth $1 million each, were sold in Mississippi, New York and Texas.
Thirty tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to take the game’s third prize. Six of those are worth $30,000 each because they also included the optional Megaplier. The other 24 third prize tickets win the standard $10,000 prize. In total, the January 28 drawing produced a total of 1,167,183 winning tickets at all prize levels, plus the lucky jackpot winner.
The jackpot had been rolling since it was last won at $108 million in Arizona on October 22. There were more than 16.2 million prizes won at all levels in this 28-drawing jackpot run, including 39 second tier prizes of $1 million or more. Those big second prizes were won in 19 different states across the country: California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Texas.
The jackpot for the next drawing on Tuesday, February 1, resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($13.7 million cash).
