RELEASE DATE: 2/1/2023
In rapid fire after a whopping $1.348 billion prize was won in Maine on January 13, the Mega Millions® jackpot has been won three more times during the first month of 2023. One ticket holder in Massachusetts matched all six numbers drawn Tuesday night – the white balls 7, 9, 18, 29 and 39, plus the gold Mega Ball 13, to win the $31 million prize ($16.5 million cash). A Bay State player also won the jackpot on January 24, which followed a New York win on January 17.
In the nearly 21-year history of Mega Millions, there had never previously been four jackpot wins in any single month. It has truly been a historic stretch without precedent, living up to the random promise of lotto games – jackpots can be won at any time, at any level.
It’s the fifth Mega Millions jackpot won in Massachusetts, one of the game’s original founding members in 2002.
There were other big winners on the last day of January. One ticket, sold in New Jersey, matched the five white balls to win the game’s second-tier prize. Because that ticket included the optional Megaplier (available in most states with an extra $1 purchase), which was 4X on Tuesday night, it is worth $4 million. For matching four white balls plus the Mega Ball, 24 tickets have a third-tier win. Five of those are worth $40,000 each because they also included the optional Megaplier; the other 19 win the standard $10,000 prize.
For the two drawings in this cycle, there were a total of 966,500 winning tickets across the country at all prize levels, including the jackpot-winning ticket.
The jackpot for the next drawing on Friday, February 3, again resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($10.6 million cash).
