Two tickets sold in California will share the tenth Mega Millions® jackpot won in 2023, just in time for the holidays! Both were purchased at the Chevron station located at 18081 Ventura Boulevard in Encino. They matched all six numbers in Friday night’s drawing – the white balls 21, 26, 53, 66 and 70, plus the gold Mega Ball 13. The prize had grown to $394 million ($188.6 million cash) since it was last won in Texas by a South Dakota-based trust on October 6. Note that the final jackpot amount is slightly different from the estimated value, reflecting actual sales.
In addition to the jackpot win, there were 715,952 winning tickets across all other prize tiers in the December 8 drawing. Twelve tickets matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to win the game’s third-tier prize. Two are worth $30,000 each because they included the optional Megaplier, which was 3X on Friday night. The other 10 third-tier winning tickets are worth $10,000 each.
Across all prize tiers, there were almost 10.5 million winning tickets during this 18-drawing jackpot run. They include 15 second-tier prizes of $1 million or more, won in 10 different jurisdictions: Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas.
It has been a highly unusual jackpot year for Mega Millions; the last time as many as 10 jackpots were won in a single year was 2013. A new game record was set on August 8, with a whopping $1.602 billion prize won in Florida, while the year started with a bang on January 13 as $1.348 billion was won in Maine. Proving that jackpots can be won at any time, two jackpots of $20 million were awarded (January 17 and April 18, both in New York), plus three in the $30 million range ($33 million on January 24 and $31 million just a week later, both in Massachusetts, and $39 million in Florida on August 15). Rounding out the year, $483 million was won in New York on April 14, and a Texas prize of $361 million was awarded on October 6.

The jackpot for the next drawing on Tuesday, December 12, resets to its current starting value of $20 million ($9.6 million cash).
Tickets for the $2 game are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In most jurisdictions, players can add the Megaplier for an additional $1 to multiply their non-jackpot prizes. Half of the proceeds from the sale of each Mega Millions ticket remains in the state where the ticket was sold, where the money supports designated good causes and retailer commissions.
