Do Two Angels Make the $65.7 Million Mega Millions Win Heaven Sent?
Drawing Date: 1/25/2013
TRENTON (Feb. 28, 2013) – Carole Hedinger, NJ Lottery Executive Director, announced New Jersey’s latest multi-million dollar Mega Millions jackpot winner, Angel Guallpa-Mayancela. Mayancela was the sole winner of the Mega Millions jackpot for the Friday, Jan. 25 drawing. By matching all five winning numbers along with the Gold Mega Ball number, Mayancela won the $89 million annuity jackpot which equates to a $65.7 million cash payout. The winning ticket was sold at Lisa’s Angel Corporation, 328 Main Street in Orange in Essex County. The winning numbers for the Jan. 25 draw were: 11, 12, 17, 31, and 48. The Gold Mega Ball was 01 and the Megaplier Multiplier was 04.
Mayancela arrived at Lottery headquarters with his family late in the day on Feb. 15 to claim the prize. With sheer joy and disbelief, the family was still in shock from the news. “I’ve been telling my wife that someday she would be married to a millionaire because I am a hard worker. So when I told her that I had won the Mega Millions $65 million jackpot, she didn’t believe me,” said Mayancela. Mayancela’s promises certainly came true with this lucky win.
“This is a life-changing moment for Angel and his family and we wish them well in all of their future endeavors,” said Hedinger. A total of 316,311 NJ Lottery players shared in nearly $2.4 million in prizes ranging in value from $2 to $250,000 during this 12 draw roll. Two tickets earned the winners $250,000 each. One of those was sold for the Dec. 18, 2012 game draw at the Acme #7946, 467 Allwood Road in Clifton in Passaic County and the other ticket was sold for the Jan. 15, 2013 game draw at the 6-Eleven Foodmart at 2595 Woodbridge Avenue in Edison in Middlesex County.
In addition to the jackpot and second prize winning tickets there were twenty New Jersey third prize winning tickets sold through the course of the run. Four of those tickets were purchased with the Megaplier Multiplier Option. The third prize is valued at $10,000 each although when a ticket is purchased with the Megaplier Multiplier Option, all non-jackpot prizes are multiplied by 2, 3 or 4 times the original amount, depending upon the Megaplier draw, which precedes the Mega Millions draw. The four players who won the third prize with the Megaplier Multiplier Option won $40,000 each.
“Along with Angel’s good fortune, and that of all of the winning players, this jackpot roll has generated an estimated contribution of more than $5.6 million to support our State sponsored institutions and educational programs,” said Hedinger. “New Jersey businesses also profit from this game roll and every game sponsored by the NJ Lottery,” Hedinger added. In fiscal year 2012, retailers earned commissions of more than $153 million.
Angel Guallpa-Mayancela is the second New Jersey resident to win the Mega Millions jackpot in less than six months. The last winning ticket was sold in New York for the Sept. 18, 2012 drawing and co-claimed by Christopher Manzi of Morganville, New Jersey, and Willie McPherson of New York City. The jackpot for that draw was $14 million. The last jackpot winning Mega Millions ticket sold by the New Jersey Lottery was on Nov. 10, 2009. That jackpot reached $77 million before it was hit and split by the Lopes family of Union County, New Jersey, and Lourdes Salina of South San Francisco, California.
Since New Jersey joined Mega Millions in 2002, 16 multi-million dollar jackpots have been claimed in the state.
