Drawing Date: 10/14/2014
Forty-eight-year-old Michael Schmitt of Massapequa Park, N.Y., was passing by the 7-Eleven on Broadway in Hewlett and decided to stop in to buy a Lottery ticket. Schmitt opted for a Mega Millions Quick Pick ticket for the October 14 drawing and matched the first five numbers drawn winning him the $1,000,000 second prize.
“I buy my tickets twice a week,” explained Schmitt. “I happened to be walking by the 7-Eleven and decided to buy a ticket.”
“I scanned the ticket at the store after the drawing and went numb. I was expressionless,” explained the father of four. “The money will be used to set up college funds for the kids.”
Schmitt purchased his ticket on October 13 and claimed it on October 16 at the New York Lottery’s Plainview Customer Service Center. He will receive his prize as a one-time lump sum payment of $661,800 after required withholdings.
The New York Lottery contributed $132,384,615.16 in Lottery Aid To Education to school districts throughout Nassau City during fiscal year 2013-2014.
