Sterling man wins $1 million playing Mega Millions
Drawing Date: 6/13/2014
June 25, 2014 - Walt Plummer knew he had a winning ticket. He thought he’d won a couple of bucks, as he had several times before. So the Sterling, Va., man showed his ticket to a store clerk and received a startling response.
“Now don’t have a heart attack…” the clerk began. It turns out the ticket was worth $1 million.
Mr. Plummer matched the first five numbers in the Friday, June 13 Mega Millions drawing. He bought the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 46141 Woodshire Drive in Sterling, Va.
On June 25, he returned to the store to receive his prize from Virginia Lottery Executive Director Paula Otto. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
The winning numbers were 7-38-46-49-56 and the Mega Ball number was 1. He used Easy Pick, allowing the computer to select the numbers on his ticket at random.
Sterling has been a very lucky place lately. Just eight days after the drawing in which Mr. Plummer won, a Powerball ticket bought in Sterling won $1 million. That ticket has not yet been claimed.
Mr. Plummer, who works as a cabinet-maker, said he intends to use his winnings to take care of his family and save for retirement.
