Waterbury’s “Baker’s Dozen + 3” claim $1,000,000 prize
Drawing Date: 1/9/2015
February 10, 2015 – What’s even better than receiving an extra donut in the dozen you ordered at your favorite bakery? Discovering that one of the lottery tickets purchased by you and your fellow bakery coworkers is the single $1,000,000 prize winning ticket in Connecticut for the January 9th Mega Millions drawing.
“It was unbelievable,” said Jacqueline Bolduc of Oakdale who works at the Costco Wholesale bakery department in Waterbury and is the person in charge of buying and checking the tickets. “I looked in the newspaper and saw we had four numbers…then I saw the fifth number match. I couldn’t believe it. First, I called Sophie and then Gina. Within hours, the word spread quickly throughout the rest of the group.”
The winning Mega Millions numbers on January 9, 2015 were 37-49-50-56-57. The group, now affectionately referred to as “The Baker’s Dozen + 3,” matched the first five numbers drawn, but missed the Mega Ball number, 8. In total, 31,124 winning Mega Millions tickets were sold statewide on that date, with prizes ranging from $1 to $1,000,000.
For the past four years, 13 bakery coworkers, plus 3 more who work in other departments, each put $4 towards the purchase of lottery tickets for the twice weekly Mega Millions drawings. Any winnings are shared equally among the sixteen.
Early this morning, each winner eagerly stepped forward to accept a check from Anne Noble, CT Lottery’s President and CEO, for their share of the $1,000,000 prize – $62,500 (before taxes).
“It’s a very exciting and happy occasion,” said Noble after shaking hands and taking photos with each of the winners. “It’s all about the fun—we love it when people play and win together.”
Cumberland Farms #4690, located at 1588 Watertown Avenue in Waterbury, sold the winning ticket and will receive a $2,500 bonus from the CT Lottery for doing so.
