Baltimore man not surprised to be Maryland’s newest millionaire
Drawing Date: 5/13/2016
May 19, 2106 - He always knew it would happen, a Baltimore man told Maryland Lottery officials, after he claimed the $1 million prize on a Mega Millions ticket and became the state’s newest millionaire. Winning the second-tier prize in the Friday the 13th drawing will allow him to accomplish much of what he and his wife have long dreamed of doing.
A state employee who makes the drive to Harford County every day for work, the 48-year-old husband and father of two often stops at Lottery retailers along his route. “I like to be a part of the big jackpot drawings every week – Powerball, Mega Millions and Cash4Life.”
Early last week, he visited Klein’s ShopRite in Belcamp to pick up a week’s worth of tickets. That Friday he dozed off while attempting to stay up to watch the Mega Millions drawing.
“I woke up at the tail end of the drawing and quickly wrote down the winning numbers. When I looked for matches on my ticket and saw a bunch, I was sure that either I’d written them down wrong or was still half asleep.”
Believing that he’d won $100,000, our winner woke his wife and pulled up the results on the Lottery’s website, mdlottery.com.
“I was confirming that I’d written the numbers down correctly when my wife tapped me on the shoulder. She told me it wasn’t a $100,000 win, but $1 million.”
Even several days later, the lucky man was stunned but not surprised. “It doesn’t make any sense, I know, but I always knew I was going to win big. What a blessing.”
The winners plan to eliminate their debt, share their good luck with family, travel and invest. For selling a $1 million winning ticket in the game, Klein’s ShopRite at 1321 Riverside Parkway in Belcamp earned a $2,500 bonus.
