Virginia Beach couple wins $1 million
Drawing Date: 12/27/2016
January 5, 2017 - When Charles Leisure heard his wife Janet’s voice on the phone, he could tell something was up. She told him the Mega Millions ticket he’d bought for the December 27 drawing was worth a million dollars.
“I thought she might be joking until I heard her voice crack,” he said.
It was no joke. The ticket matched the first five numbers, missing only the Mega Ball number.
He bought the winning ticket at Wawa, 720 Woodlake Drive in Chesapeake, which is near where he works. He said he often goes there for lunch.
On January 5, the Virginia Beach couple returned to the store to receive the check from the Virginia Lottery. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
The winning numbers were 2-28-30-38-39, and the Mega Ball number was 11. He used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on the ticket. If it had matched all six numbers, the Leisures would have won a jackpot estimated at $85 million.
They said they have no immediate plans for their winnings except to pay bills.
