Virginia man keeps his cool after winning $2 million Drawing Date: 5/28/2019 August 7, 2019 - When Calvin Kim discovered he’d matched the first five numbers in the May 28 Mega Millions drawing, anyone around him might not have noticed anything out of the ordinary. The Alexandria, Va., man recalls thinking “Hey cool!” and tucking the ticket in a book for safekeeping. Matching the first five numbers in Mega Millions would normally win $1 million. But when Mr. Kim bought his ticket, he spent an extra dollar for the Megaplier. That extra buck doubled his prize to $2 million. He bought his winning ticket at Saigon Bakery & Deli at 6773 Wilson Blvd. in Falls Church, Va. He said he went there to buy his wife a sandwich. The winning numbers were 9-21-34-42-50, and the Mega Ball number was 21. He used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on his ticket. Mr. Kim said he intends to save his winnings toward retirement. His ticket was the only one in Virginia to match the first five numbers in the May 28 drawing and one of just five nationwide. No ticket matched all six numbers to win that night’s estimated $418 million jackpot. When it comes to education, the Virginia Lottery is good fun for a great cause. Mr. Kim lives in Alexandria, which received more than $3.2 million in Lottery funds for K-12 public education last fiscal year.
