Retired Maryland veteran wins big! Drawing Date: 5/24/2022 June 3, 2022 - A retired disabled veteran is basking in the glow of a $1 million Lottery win from the May 24 Mega Millions® drawing. The Elkton, Md., resident was running errands with his wife when he purchased some of his favorite Lottery games, including a quick-pick Mega Millions ticket, before heading home. That Mega Millions ticket yielded the big prize. The lucky player was home watching television when he realized he just missed seeing the Mega Millions drawing that Tuesday night. So, he used the Maryland Lottery app on his phone to scan his ticket. The 73-year-old was stunned when the message read, “Congratulations! $1 million winner.” When checking the numbers, the winner realized he matched the five white balls, missing the gold Mega Ball to take home the second-tier prize. “I just thought, ‘Oh my, what am I going to do,’” he told Maryland Lottery officials. Although it was late and his wife was sleep, the Cecil County resident had to share the good news. “I told her to not be mad, but I won $1 million on Mega Millions,” said the big winner. “She thought I was mistaken and that I only won a few dollars.” When he showed her the matching numbers on the Lottery’s website, she was convinced! The two of them could not get back to sleep as they thought about what to do with the windfall. Later that morning, the father and grandfather called his children to tell them the news. “It was early, 5:30 in the morning,” said the winner’s son who accompanied him to claim the prize at Lottery headquarters. “It was shocking. I thought ‘There’s no way he won.’” The new millionaire told Lottery officials that he plans to use the prize to pay off some bills, help his family members, donate to his church and make some investments. The lucky player found his winning ticket at Star Gas Mart located at 207 West Main Street in Rising Sun. For selling the winning ticket, the Cecil County retailer received a $2,500 bonus from the Lottery.
