Last-minute purchase wins big Drawing Date: 1/3/2023 January 17, 2023 - Around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, a Jarrettsville, Md., man realized that there was a $785 million Mega Millions jackpot up for grabs and he hadn’t yet bought a ticket. The 55-year-old dashed to a nearby Maryland Lottery retailer and is now a millionaire. He bought a $10 ticket with five quick-pick lines at High’s #130 in White Hall and went on his way. After the drawing, the player discovered his win after scanning the ticket using the Lottery app on his smartphone. He scanned it several times to make sure what he was seeing was accurate. Convinced he won a $1 million second-tier prize, the happy player called his wife to share his great news. She started crying tears of joy once she learned what her lucky husband had done! The Harford County resident has worked as a U.S. Postal Service carrier for three decades. He says that retirement is on the horizon but the $1 million Mega Millions win won’t change his timetable. He plans to keep working and use his winnings to pay off bills. His lucky retailer located at 4101 Norrisville Road will receive a $2,500 bonus for selling a $1 million winning ticket. The lucky player is one of two who won $1 million playing Mega Millions in 2023. The other ticket, which remains unclaimed, was sold in the Jan. 6 drawing by Marlboro Liquors in Upper Marlboro.
