RELEASE DATE: 6/18/2016
The seventh largest jackpot in Mega Millions history will be up for grabs next Tuesday, June 21, after no ticket matched all six numbers drawn Friday night – 20, 23, 30, 44 and 59, plus the Mega Ball 9. The next jackpot is an estimated $333 million ($226 million cash), the biggest prize offered in the game since March 18, 2014, when two tickets (sold in Florida and Maryland) shared a $414 million jackpot.
In the June 17 drawing, there were more than three million winning tickets sold, including three Match 5 winning tickets, sold in California, New Jersey and Rhode Island. The Rhode Island ticket included the optional Megaplier, turning the $1 million prize into a $5 million bonanza when the 5x Megaplier was drawn. That is the largest Mega Millions prize ever won in Rhode Island, which joined the game in 2010.
It’s the second time in a week that a $5 million Match 5 prize has been won, following a similar win in Texas on June 10. Since January 1, 10 Match 5 winning tickets have included the Megaplier, an optional $1 purchase available in most states.
The jackpot has been rolling since it was last won in Washington on March 8 at $157 million.
The record Mega Millions jackpot is $656 million – three tickets shared that jackpot on March 30, 2012. Just behind that is the $648 million jackpot split by two winners on December 17, 2013. Other top jackpots were $414 million (two winners on March 18, 2014), $390 million (two winners on March 6, 2007), $380 million (two winners on January 4, 2011) and $336 million (two winners on August 28, 2009). The most won on a single ticket was $326 million on November 4, 2014.
